Meet marvelous Forrest!  Forrest is a 2 ½-year-old white German Shepherd Dog (GSD) who came into a metropolitan Atlanta shelter around May 2023, in rough shape.  Since then, he has received a lot of loving care from special volunteers and staff who brought him back from the brink to become the beautiful, healthy, happy boy he is today.  Forrest was loved by his shelter volunteers and has been in a couple of foster homes with glowing reports.  Forrest is friendly with people, including men and gets along with dogs of all sizes. He is a GSD and can be cautious of new people. GSD’s prefer to assess someone new for a few minutes before they reach out to pet them. This is a common GSD trait and an experienced GSD owner will know this and understand GSD behavior and traits. He has a low energy level around people and is pretty quiet. He has more energy with other dogs. He’s currently in foster with several dogs of all sizes. Forrest is happy to be around them and thinks he’s every dog’s BFF.  He loves to approach them for playing and he is learning when they want to play. He is responsive to dog cues from his foster buddies when they tell him it’s not playtime.  The current foster home also includes a cat, and although Forrest has been separated from the cat, he is unfazed when he sees it so we think he would do well in a home with a cat.  Forrest knows basic commands: “sit” and “down” and he loves to play fetch.  He is easy to walk and is not reactive to dogs on walks even when they bark at him.  Forrest is an easy car rider.  He enjoys taking in all the sights, sounds, and smells of the world. He is good at the vet’s office.  Like any younger GSD, Forrest needs to be in a home where he will get the chance to run around and get his energy out.  Forrest does not like to be crated and he will escape from a crate.  He gets anxious and cries and barks when crated, so if he has to be crate, he needs a very strong impact crate. The plus though, is that he is not destructive when left uncrated so crating him is not necessary.  Forrest would do best in a home whose owners have previous GSD experience to help give him the structure, stability, patience, and human connection he seeks and needs. GSD’s are amazing dogs and they bond deeply with their people. This also makes them more protective of their people and their home.  They often check the yard perimeter because it is in their DNA.  Forrest has never shown an ounce of reactive behavior but he is still a GSD and true to his breed will want to make sure his people are safe and happy. He is an amazing dog and would make a phenomenal addition to any loving home.  If you'd like to meet Forrest, please visit our website and fill out an application today at  www.ehrdogs.org!
